ESPN: Catholics to Leave Big East

Chris Trotman

A co-written article by Brett McMurphy, Andy Katz, Dana O'Neil on ESPN is noting that sources close to the situation that the group of Catholic Schools in the Big East- Villanova, Georgetown, St. John's, Marquette, Seton Hall, Providence, and DePaul are close to splitting from the FBS Conference.

ESPN says "it would be an upset" if The Seven remained in the Big East, but the writing is on the wall for the formation of a CYO League.

To answer the question of possible lawsuits in the wake of the conference merry-go-round, ESPN claims that Temple, as a football-only member, does not have voting rights on the dissolution of the conference. With Temple unable to vote on the topic the seven basketball-only schools possess the requisite 2/3 Vote needed to dissolve the Big East.

The Catholic-7 have scheduled a teleconference with Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco on Thursday and will issue a statement within 24 hours.
