Villanova officially announced that former Villanova forward Curtis Sumpter will officially take on the title of Student-Athlete Development Assistant along with a slew of other title changes on the men's basketball staff. Sumpter's hiring was first reported here over a month ago, though we were not sure of his actual title until this afternoon.
"Right now I've just been spending a lot of time at Villanova to learn, try to learn that side of the business," Sumpter told VUhoops earlier this month.
"I'm just anxious. I want to take this next year to learn as much as I can. I think I'll have a pretty solid decision after this year whether I want to go into coaching or not. I think I need to see that side of basketball for at least a year before I make a solid decision."
In addition to bringing Sumpter on board, much of the rest of the staff saw their job titles change. Jason Donnelly, who joined the staff in 2005 has now taken the role of Special Assistant to the Head Coach, upgraded from Assistant Coach. Baker Dunleavy is now an Assistant Coach after serving as Director of Operations and as an Assistant Strength Coach the past two season.
The new Director of Basketball Operations will be Arleshia Davidson, who has served as an administrator since 2009. Former Babson College (Division III) guard George Halcovage has been promoted to Video Coordinator, where his previous job title was as an intern. Both are significant upgrades in title, to match increased responsibilities that each had taken on.
Associate Head Coach Billy Lange remains in that position with no change to his title or duties, while Raphael Chillious joined the staff recently with the title of Assistant Coach.
"In our basketball family, the priority is teaching and mentoring our young guys to be the best students, best men and best players they can be," stated Wright. "We have a great group of passionate people here to help us do just that."
