Villanova played Auburn in the 1937 Bacardi Bowl in Havana, Cuba on New Year's Day. It was the first-ever bowl game for either school and they played to a 7-7 tie. It was also the first bowl game to be played outside the United States. The two teams would meet again in the 1937 regular season, but the attempt to break the deadlock was unsuccessful, with that meeting resulting in a 0-0 tie. A year later, Villanova would pick up a 25-12 victory over the Tigers to take the first win in the series.
