Big 5 Round Up

During the 2013-2014 basketball season, I will be posting updates on the Big 5 teams and upcoming games.

Here is the inaugural post.

#1 St. Joseph's Hawks (2-0)

The Hawks are starting out well. Beginning the season at 2-0, SJU posted wins at Vermont, 74-64, and against Marist, 81-62 at home. St. Joe's will have their hands full today when Creighton comes to Philly. A loss and the Hawks may fall from the top ranking.

#2 Villanova Wildcats(2-0)

Villanova also began the season at 2-0, posting home wins vs Lafayette, 75-59, and against Mount St. Mary's, 90-59. The Cats continue their hospitality by hosting Towson and Delaware this week. Villanova should be 4-0, and may move into the top spot, although a road win would be nice.

#3 LaSalle Explorers(1-1)

The Explorers started the season with two home games, losing to Manhattan in their opener, 99-90, then defeating Quinnipiac 73-67. The Explorers played Quinnipiac at Tom Gola Arena at 9am as part of ESPN's Tip Off Marathon, 24 hours of live games to kick off the season. LaSalle will play Siena today, also at home. The Explorers will be tested Tuesday at Penn State. Look for LaSalle to stay at .500.

#4 Temple Owls(1-2)

The Temple Owls posted the first Big 5 win of the season with a 78-73 win over Penn at the Palestra. The Owls then went on to lose to Kent State at home 81-77, and Towson on the road, 75-69. Temple will face Clemson and either Davidson or Georgia at the Charleston Classic . I am not sure Temple will come back to Philly with a win.

#5 Penn Quakers(1-1)

The Quakers are 1-1, and had to be ranked below Temple since Penn lost the head to head matchup. Penn was able to get on the winning track by posting a 79-73 victory at Monmouth. The Quakers will take on Penn State today and travel to Iowa later this week for a pair of Big 10 contests. It may be a tough week for Penn.

Enjoy the games.
