Villanova dominated the Tigers for 45 minutes, but got blitzed in the final quarter.
In a mid-week clash at Class of 1952 Stadium, the Villanova men's lacrosse team dropped a close contest to the #5 Princeton Tigers by the score of 14-11. With the loss, Villanova drops to 1-3 on the season while Princeton improves their undefeated mark to 3-0. Five Cats notched two points in the game, including Nick Doherty, Kevin O'Neil, Eric Gartner, Paul Mita, and Will Casertano. Jeff Froccaro and Ryan Ambler tallied a hat trick each for the Tigers.
Villanova outplayed Princeton for the first 3 quarters, leading 5-2 after the first, 8-6 at half, and 10-8 after the third quarter. Thomas Bloonquist was also controlling the ball at the faceoff X, going 15 for 21 through the first 45 minutes, leading to extra offensive possessions for Villanova. However, everything turned around in the fourth when Jeff Froccaro won 5 of 7 faceoffs and Princeton used a 6-1 run to capture the victory. Froccaro scored 2 goals in the rally during the 4th quarter.
Princeton head coach Chris Bates commented on Froccaro's performance after the game, saying:
"He's such a gamer. We didn't want to use him facing off, but we felt we needed to get another look out there. It was a midweek game, our first after a big win, against a team we handled last year. It wasn't going to be easy for us."
Head coach Mike Corrado has to get these late collapses fixed. It is clear that Nova can play with the top teams in the country, but playing the entire 60 minutes is what separates great teams from average teams. The Cats only have 3 days to figure things out as they take on #18 Penn on Saturday in the Whitman's Sampler Independence Classic. Game time is 2:30 PM at PPL Park in Chester, PA.
