After a week in which we were humiliated by Creighton a second time, then narrowly escaping with a win in OT at Providence and surviving St. John's at home, I am pondering the following question:
How good are we?
Losses to #1 Syracuse and Creighton two times are a bit alarming.
Providence has been on the bubble-Last In/Last Out tourament team list on ESPN's Bracketology for the past two weeks. St. John's has been one of the hottest teams in the country for the past few weeks. Villanova found a way to grind out a win in both games. This has been a theme for much of the season. The Cats are 5-0 in overtime games this season. Overtime games and tournament play come down to guard play. Ryan Arcidiacono and Darrun Hilliard have been excellent this season.
Villanova currently sits at 24-3, ranked #9 in the country. The three losses have all been blowouts. Our regular season wraps out with conference games vs Butler, Marquette, at Xavier and finally vs Georgetown. Butler and Marquette are having down years but Xavier is fighting for seeding and Georgetown is on the bubble and would have an impressive win to show the Selection Comittee if they can knock off the Wildcats.
According to Bracketology, the Big East would have six teams in the NCAA tourament. That 10 games versus conference opponents of tournament quality. Add regular season opponents Kansas, Iowa, St. Joseph's and Syracuse, and we have 14 games against NCAA quality opponents.
Villanova should finish as a 2 or 3 seed, possibly in the East Region. If the Cats are successful in their first round game, they should play either Oklahoma, Ohio State or Connecticut. Regional final opponents at Madison Square Garden could be Michigan State, with the winner getting an opportunity to face Syracuse at MSG for a trip to the Final Four. Not an easy task if this is the journey.
I've enjoyed watching the Wildcats this year. I love their toughness. If you told me before the season, that Villanova would have over 20 wins, possibly a Big East regular season title and a NCAA 2 or 3 seed, I would have signed up for that.
But after following the team all season, is it wrong to want a little more? Will we consider the season a dissapointment if we don't get to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament? I guess only time will tell.
I do, however, know one thing for certain. Please ditch the grey home uniforms.
