Earning a Double Bye in the Big East Tourny

bigeast.jpgThe standings at the top of the Big East Conference currently look like this:

  1. Connecticut 14-2
  2. Louisville 13-2
  3. Pittsburgh 12-3
  4. Marquette 12-3
  5. Villanova 11-4

As we know, this year the top 4 teams in the Big East will receive a "double bye" in the conference tournament with a direct route to the quarterfinals.

So what are Villanova's chances of getting into the top 4? Of course 'Nova needs to take care of business on their end, but it will need some help- and it isn't too unfathomable.

All Villanova needs is for either Pitt or 'Quette to slip a notch with their remaining three games... and it doesn't seem too unlikely given that Marquette has lost Dominic James.

Marquette's Remaining Games
@ Louisville- March 1
@ Pitt- March 4
vs. Syracuse- March 7

Pitt's Remaining Games
@ Seton Hall- Feb 28
vs. Marquette- March 4
vs. Connecticut- March 7

Either Pitt or Marquette will have at least one loss. PLUS, Pitt will face possible #1 UConn, and Marquette plays #6 Louisville... on the road. If either Pitt or Marquette go 1-2, a double bye is in Villanova's hands as the Wildcats control their own destiny.

'Nova's next three games are nowhere near being locks. Georgetown, Notre Dame, and Providence are all trying to show their worth late in the season and are prime for an upset. But if Villanova wins out it looks highly probable that they will get two days off in the Big East Tourney.
