On a warm October day at the Villanova Soccer Complex, Villanova edged past BIG EAST rivals Rutgers 1-0 for their third conference win in four tries.
The ‘Cats were hoping to pounce on a wounded Rutgers side early, as the Scarlet Knights entered the match winless in conference play. ‘Nova did just that, with freshman Dylan Renna grabbing his fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute of play. Renna was fed through on a breakaway courtesy of a deft pass from Kevin Garcia. With Rutgers keeper Adam Klink closing down the angle, Renna skillfully slipped a shot with outside of his right foot into the lower right-hand corner for a 1-0 lead.
It was a fairly even affair for the bulk of the match, with both sides taking turns trying long distance efforts that failed to test either goalkeeper.
Rutgers nearly leveled the match in the 82nd minute when Todd Webb found himself unmarked at the back post, but his free header was acrobatically tipped over by ‘Nova goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan.
After that scare Villanova tightened their backline the rest of the way, seeing out an important conference victor
With the win, the Wildcats are now in sole possession of second place in the BIG EAST Red Division with a 3-0-1 mark. The top two teams at the end of the regular season receive a first round bye in the conference playoffs.
‘Nova travels to Georgetown this Saturday for another important BIG EASTt showdown. The match kicks off at 1pm
