Kyle McCarthy Upstages Game-Winning Goal With Celebration In Win Over Syracuse

It took a little longer than Villanova had hoped, but ultimately the Wildcats walked out of the West Campus Soccer Complex 2-1 winners over Syracuse, courtesy of a Kyle McCarthy goal in the second overtime period.

McCarthy pounced on a rebound following a tremendous solo run from freshman Dylan Renna.  Renna turned a defender down the right flank before cutting in and beating a second Orange player, freeing himself for a clean look with his left foot.  His strike clanged off the underside of the crossbar, but McCarthy was Johnny-on-the-spot to earn his team three massive points in the BIG EAST table.

Villanova got on the board early when Kyle Soroka hit a terrific shot from 22 yards out into the bottom left hand corner.  Soroka’s initial long distance effort was blocked, but he showed great resolve in staying with the play and getting off another blast.

The match evened out for the majority of the half, until Syracuse found an equalizer in the 44th minute.  Two failed clearances by the ‘Cats found Orange midfielder Mark Brode wide open with the ball at his foot six yards from goal.  Brode made no mistake, slotting the ball past Chris Bresnahan to tie the match at 1-1.

The second half featured opportunities for both sides, with Bresnahan palming away a header off of a Syracuse corner, and Emerson Lawrence driving a shot from distance just over the bar.

The Orange looked visibly tired in the overtime period, with Villanova seizing the game’s tempo.  The first ten minute period yielded no goals, but the Wildcats had clearly gained control of the match.  Three minutes into the second overtime stanza, ‘Nova was able to breakthrough and claim all three points.

With the win Villanova moves to 8-5-2 (4-1-1) on the year.  The Wildcats currently sit in a tie for second place with Cincinnati in the BIG EAST Red Division.  With only three matches to play, both teams currently sit on 13 points.  Incidentally, these two teams will meet in a crucial BIG EAST encounter on Saturday at 12pm at the West Campus Soccer Complex. Please come out and support our guys as they aim to lock up home field advantage in the playoffs!
