It wasn't always pretty, but it was definitely one of the more hard-fought games that I've watched at any level. You could tell both teams desparetely wanted this game, not just because it meant home-field advantage for Delaware in the playoffs or a playoff spot for Villanova, but for The Battle of the Blue.
Delaware converted a 4th and goal with 15 seconds left after Villanova stood them up 3 plays in a row from the 1 yard line to tie the score at 21 and force overtime. Momentum immediately shifted to the Blue Hens side as we headed to OT, but the 'Cats wouldn't be denied the chance at a playoff-berth.
And in the end, Villanova prevailed in overtime 28-21 thanks to an Aaron Ball 1-yard run on 3rd in goal, and then a Martel Moody fumble recovery when Delaware had a 1st and goal at the 'Nova 3 yard line. The win makes it 5 straight over Delaware.
Goal line stand! Cats win! 5 in a row over Delaware!
Matt Szczur did not have his best day in his long-awaited return (just 3 carries for 24 yards) but the rest of the team picked him up. Norman White was spectacular and clutch with 5 receptions for 66 yards and Chris Whitney rebounded from a bad stretch of games with 150 yards passing and 34 yards rushing, including the go-ahead TD in the 4th.
The playoff brackets will be announced shortly, with the first round being played on December 4th.
