Morning Cup O' Mud: Weekend 'Nova Sports Recap

I was out of pocket most of the weekend, and yes there was some rumbles about our ongoing Big East expansion crisis - including a morning call today between the Big East presidents and athletic directors where raising the exit fee to $10 million will be discussed. But we'll start you off today with everything that happened in Villanova sports this weekend.

Wildcats Fall in Heartbreaker to Louisville, 3-2, in Double Overtime
Redshirt freshman midfielder Stephanie Myers (Downingtown, Pa.) scored one goal in each period of regulation but a deflected ball early in the second overtime period dealt Villanova (6-7-2, 2-5 BIG EAST) an extremely tough 3-2 loss in double overtime at the hands of Louisville (6-5-3, 4-1-2 BIG EAST) at the West Campus Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.

Versatility Has Helped Lawrence Thrive
At the age of five, Emerson Lawrence eagerly absorbed everything his coach -also known as his father, Evon Lawrence - had to offer on the subject of the family's sport of choice, soccer. The lesson that resonated so deeply in the mid-1990s's is one that has served him especially well all these years later.

Goal in 85th Minute Helps DePaul Tie Wildcats 1-1
A goal in the 85th minute by senior Matt Leinauer lifted DePaul into a 1-1 tie with Villanova in a BIG EAST men's soccer match played here on a warm and sunny afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Complex. The Wildcats are now 4-4-4 overall and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST while their Red Division rivals, the Blue Demons, are now 4-6-2 overall, 1-1-1 within the BIG EAST.

Wildcats Drop Heart Breaker in Overtime to Providence
Villanova (5-8, 1-2) held a lead late against Providence (3-9, 1-2), but a late goal by the Friars pushed the game to overtime where Providence scored to take the BIG EAST tilt 3-2. Freshmen Jessica Swoboda (Hanover Township, Pa.) and Lauren Wilson (Hummelstown, Pa.) each scored in defeat.

Wildcats Drop First Conference Match, 3-1 at Syracuse
A late rally was not enough on Friday evening as the Villanova volleyball team (12-6, 4-1 BIG EAST) fell 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 26-28) at Syracuse.

Kevin Decker threw three touchdowns and ran for another, leading New Hampshire to an easy win over Villanova, 47-17, on Saturday.

Wildcats Bested in Straight Sets at Marquette
A tough road trip came to a close as the Villanova volleyball team (12-7, 4-2 BIG EAST) fell at Marquette on Sunday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center, 3-0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-21).

Villanova Tied for Seventh at Big Five
Villanova sits in a tie for seventh at the Big Five Invitational being played at the par-70, 6,600-yard Plymouth Country Club. As a team, Villanova shot a 298 (+18) and is twelve shots back of the leader, Dartmouth. Junior Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) is in a tie for ninth place after firing a 72 (+2).

Men's Cross Country Finishes First at Jack Saint Clair Memorial Championships
Freshman Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) was the individual winner and redshirt freshman Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) the top team finisher at the fourth annual Jack Saint Clair Memorial Championships, held on the Liberty Bell Course at Belmont Plateau on Saturday afternoon. Villanova finished first out of nine squads, including five collegiate teams that were in competition.

Kania Finishes in a Tie for Sixth at Big Five
Villanova came into the Big Five Invitational at the par-70, 6,600-yard Plymouth Country Club looking to defend their city title from the other four schools. However, they were unable to do that as they finished in 11th as a team at 599 (+39) out of 22 schools and third among the Philadelphia universities.
