Villanova Defeats NYIT 91-58 In Exhibition Match

The Villanova Wildcats took down the New York Institute of Technology Bears tonight at the Wells Fargo Center by the score of 91-58. Here is the box score from the official athletic site.

Maalik Wayns was the leading scorer with 21 points (7-16 FG) and 7 assists while James Bell wasn't far behind with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Mouphtaou Yarou had a relatively quiet night in 21 minutes with 10 points and 4 rebounds while his frontcourt mate Markus Kennedy had 2 points and 5 rebounds.

Dominic Cheek put up and impressive night on the boards with 13 rebounds to go along with 8 points and 5 assists. His 2-11 night from the floor leaves a lot to be desired, however.

Ty Johnson put up 8 points, 2 assists and 2 turnovers in backup point guard duties while JayVaughn Pinkston had a very productive 21 minutes with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Achraf Yacoubou appeared to have the best stroke from outside, hitting 3-5 from beyond the arc to gather in 11 points.

Darrun Hilliard had a pretty quiet night with 5 points and 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. Maurice Sutton played just 7 minutes on the night - perhaps a clear sign that he is on the outside looking in at the frontcourt rotation.

As a whole, the team will need to do better than 20-59 from the floor if they are to compete at the level they expect to this season.

It's hard to gather much from just seeing the box score, so if anyone was in attendance please share your thoughts on the game below. We're back in action on Friday against Monmouth in the season opener.
