Morning Cup O' Mud: Conference Realignment Madness Continues


I thought Monday (hell, Saturday and Sunday too) were enough to satisfy our appetite on Big East expansion, conference realignment, or whatever you want to call it. Then yesterday happened.

Conference Realignment: West Virginia Rejected By ACC, SEC Says No For Now | The Nova Blog
Things started off rather slowly (ha!) with Brett McMurphy reporting that Big East officials were notified that West Virginia was not only rejected by the ACC, but the SEC as well. The latter came as somewhat of a shock to some, until they remembered Missouri is a much better option for the SEC.

The Big East athletic directors from the "football schools" then convened for a meeting Tuesday night in New York. The meeting will be to discuss the future of the conference and all available options for the members schools. Naturally, Villanova was not invited, asked to be invited, and was still told no.

Late in the evening, the biggest shock of the day rocked the country. Apparently, the Big East Conference was close to adding Navy and Air Force before Syracuse and Pitt left for the ACC.

All five Villanova golfers are inside the top-25 in the 95 person field and the Wildcats sit alone in third place at the Adam's Cup of Newport. Villanova shot a 291 (+3) at the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National Golf Club after the first round in the 54-hole event, which will conclude tomorrow. Villanova is just three shots behind UCF for the tournament lead. The second round got started this afternoon, but was not completed.

Junior Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.) finished in a tie for 8th at the Adam's Cup of Newport in Newport, R.I. with a 73-70-72--215(-1) at the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National Course. It is Skurla's first top-ten of the year, after a top-20 at the McLaughlin, in the 95-player field as he was second in the 54-hole event with 38 pars in the three rounds. As a team, the Wildcats finished in a tie for 5th in the 19-team competition with an 871 (+7).

Senior Kim Maroon has been named to the BIG EAST honor roll for the second consecutive week and third time this season, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
