2011-2012 Stat Line
Maurice Sutton, also known as Mo, has had an interesting career at Villanova. Not many people expected much out of Sutton, especially considering how lanky he is. This body configuration usually doesn't fit too well in the rugged Big East, but Sutton became a sort of fan favorite last year. After contributing sparingly in his first few seasons on the Main Line, Sutton was called upon to provide minutes down low last year with Mouphtaou Yarou struggling at times. Although he was never much of an offensive threat, Sutton regularly provided instant energy on the defensive end by contributing blocks and grabbing rebounds.
Sutton's best games occurred in Big East play against the likes of Notre Dame and Marquette last season. In both instances, Mo recorded double-doubles in losing efforts. He also swatted 4 shots against the Fighting Irish. While his numbers didn't always show up on the stat sheet, Mo was able to provide leadership for a very young squad, and he certainly will be asked to do this again in the 2012-2013 season.
For Jay Wright and the 2012-2013 Villanova Wildcats, a guy like Sutton could be very important in terms of mentoring the underclassmen. Sutton certainly is not a huge presence in the paint on offense but his hustle and desire should wear off on the Nova newcomers.
Best Case Scenario: Sutton continues to understand that he's a role player with the ability to change opponents' shots defensively and rebound the ball on a consistent basis on both ends of the floor.
Worst Case Scenario: If Sutton feels pressure as senior to score the basketball, the Wildcats will be in trouble because Sutton's offensive skills are limited at best.
Ed's Wisdom of Crowds experiment is back for the 2012-2013 season. Following each of our previews we will be sampling the VUHoops community on the projected performances of the Villanova roster for the upcoming season.
Bleacher Report predicts that Mr. Sutton will be a marginally more important part of the offense this season, with his PPG increasing to 5.0 while playing 17.0 MPG. They write, "Known mostly as a defensive presence, Sutton improved enough throughout his junior campaign that he earned a starting spot seven times. The lanky fifth year senior will be looking to solidify his spot in the Wildcats lineup as he hopes to erase the memory of last year's nightmare season. The lone member remaining from Villanova's final four team of 2009, Sutton is in line to make a significant impact during this season."
