Your Favorite (Villanova) Olympic Sports Moment

New, comments

With the Summer Olympics rapidly approaching, and our recent trend of nostalgia not yet wearing off for us, we thought it would be a good time to discuss your favorite Olympic sports moment of all-time - with one caveat. Let's stick the moments that involved Villanovans.

I say this because, believe it or not, Villanova has a splendidly rich history at the Olympics, especially in track & field. In total, 'Nova has recorded 13 medals at the Olympics, specifically 9 gold and 4 silver. In fact, starting in 1948, there has been at least one Villanovan at every single Summer games

The moment I'm going to pick is what started out the entire run - in 1956 at the Melbourne, Australia summer games Ron Delany and Charlie Jenkins would combine to bring home three gold medals for the United States and Villanova. Delany won the 1500 meter event with a then-Olympic record time of 3:41.2 which at the time was just 0.6 seconds away from the world record.

Even more impressive is Jenkins, who still remains the only Villanovan to win 2 goal medals. Jenkins won the 400 meter race posting a time of 46.7 seconds and ran the 3rd leg of the 4x400 meter relay with a 45.5 second split, which was the fastest on the team.

These two legends are undoubtedly two of the most important figures not just in Villanova track & field history, but in the entire athletics program as their success helped set the stage for Villanova's success today.
