The Villanova Wildcats men's soccer team improved their record to 7-2 on the season with the win earlier this afternoon, and can now boast a 3-0 record in the Philly Soccer Six competition courtesy of today's victory in addition to earlier wins over Penn and La Salle.
Villanova spent the early portions of the game dominating the run of play and produced 4 shots early on to Temple's 1. But the Owls would product the first great chance of the game when Homero Rodriguez dragged a shot wide of goalkeeper John Fogarty in the 18th minute.
The game seemed destined to go into the break scoreless before 'Nova took the lead late in the half. Alec Weiss picked up the primary assist on the play as his long throw-in found Kyle McCarthy inside the box. McCarthy managed to glance a header towards the goal that took a deflection off of an Owls' defender and found the back of the net.
In the 2nd half, things would ultimately remain scoreless but both teams produced quality chances, including Temple hitting the woodwork when John Fogarty could only stand by and watch as the ball caromed out of play.
Villanova has done well in out of conference play (and still have one game remaining on October 9th vs. Lafayette) but this Saturday they will open Big East play with #20 South Florida visits the West Campus Soccer Complex to take on the Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 1 pm ET.
