Prowling The Roster: #98 Patrick McGown

We're counting down the days to Villanova's season opener by profiling every player on the roster.

#98 DL Patrick McGown

Sophomore, 6'4" 230 lbs.

Valencia, CA

2012 Stats: McGown did not accumulate any playing time, making him eligible for a 5th year down the line.

Depth Chart Position: With the two-deep looking pretty strong on the defensive line, special teams will likely be the quickest path to playing time for McGown. Because of his natural pass-rushing skills, he could find some time in clear passing downs if he impresses during practice.

How He Came To Villanova: McGown was a surprise signee for Villanova on National Signing Day in 2012, having not previously been on our radar. In his senior season at Sierra Canyon High School, the pass-rushing specialist recorded 17 sacks while helping his team to the 2011 state title. He was a 1st team All-CIF and All-League selection.

Expected Output In 2013: After watching from the sidelines during his freshman season, you would hope that McGown pushes for playing time during fall camp and throughout the season. His role seems likely to remain as a pass-rushing specialist unless he continues to add bulk, but there's always room for a player with that skillset on any roster. Special teams could be the easiest way to playing time come fall, but if the defensive line suffers injuries he may be pressed into action.
