Darryl Reynolds comes to Villanova as the only true backup post presence to starter Daniel Ochefu. During his senior season at Lower Merion, Reynolds averaged 11.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 4.2 bpg en route to All-Southeastern Pennsylvania honors. He's a graduate of the Philly Pride AAU program.
Reynolds opted for a post-graduate year at Worcester Academy to improve his college options. He eventually considered Utah, Seton Hall and South Carolina before committing to Villanova in April. The prep year should help Reynolds adjust to the size and speed of the college game more quickly.
How much Reynolds plays remains to be seen, as Jay Wright could opt to play small ball with a combination of JayVaughn Pinkston, Kris Jenkins and James Bell splitting time in the frontcourt, but Reynolds' size alone should lead to immediate playing time for the Wildcats in 2013.
Here's Jay Wright on Reynolds:
"Darryl was well-schooled at Lower Merion by his coach Gregg Downer and he has used his post-graduate year to continue to develop under the tutelage of Jamie Sullivan. He brings athleticism, rebounding and a commitment to becoming the best player he can be to Villanova. We believe Darryl's best basketball is ahead of him."
Best Case Scenario: Reynolds is a capable backup to Ochefu in the post, and uses his post-grad experience to become a more than capable replacement for the departed Maurice Sutton. Besting Sutton's 3.2 ppg and 2.7 rpg line from a year ago is within reach.
Worst Case Scenario: Wright opts to bring Reynolds along slowly and utilize the small-ball lineup, limiting Reynolds' ability to contribute. With a redshirt is out of the question, 2013 ends up a wasted year for Reynolds.
The Wisdom of Crowds Returns
We are pleased to bring back our Wisdom of Crowds experiment for the 2013-2014 season. In this series, we ask that you consider the points covered in our player preview to supplement your own personal insights and instincts to predict the points per game each scholarship player on the roster we score in the upcoming season.
Darryl Reynolds is one of three scholarship freshmen on the squad, so we don't have the benefit of prior year stats as a basis for our scoring predication. To the extent that history is a guide, here's a sample of the scoring averages of past Villanova forwards during their freshman campaigns:
- Daniel Ochefu - 3.5 PPG
- JayVaughn Pinkston - 9.6 PPG
- Mouphtaou Yarou - 4.5 PPG
- Isaiah Armwood - 2.3 PPG
- Antonio Pena - 6.9 PPG
