On Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field in Jamaica, NY, the Villanova men's lacrosse team beat the Red Storm of St. John's by a score of 13-11. With the win, Nova improves to 5-6 overall and 4-0 in the Big East. In addition, the win locks up a spot in the Big East Tournament, which will take place at Villanova Stadium in early May. The loss drops the 14th ranked Red Storm to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The game was tightly contested throughout, with neither team holding more than a 3 goal edge at any time. Although St. John's scored the first goal of the contest, Villanova responded with 4 straight goals and never let the home team lead again. With the game tied at 8 early in the third quarter, the Wildcats used a 4-1 run to close out the stanza and take control of the game.
Thomas Croonquist was stellar yet again at the face-off X, winning 17 of 27 for Nova. Three players recorded hat tricks for the Cats including John Kluh, Max Hart, and Eric Gartner. Gartner also chipped in with 2 assists. For the Red Storm, Kevin Cernuto had 3 goals and 2 dimes.
Villanova tries to go for their fourth straight win next Saturday when they travel to South Bend to take on another top 5 team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Game time is 2 PM EST.
