Happy Monday, 'Nova Nation! Tough loss in lax over the weekend, which pretty much ends a season which will see us win the BIG EAST regular season championship but fall short of the NCAA Tournament. It's tough to look at the bracket and see how many teams we faced this year. If only we had won a couple more games...

Jason Collins' admission last Monday that he is gay was seen as a watershed moment in professional sports. He became the first athlete in the four major pro sports – baseball, men's basketball, football and hockey – to come out while still active. But Will Sheridan, the former Sanford hoops star and four-year starter at Villanova who is gay, said the true watershed moment won’t come until a star player comes out.

Softball - Poppe Sets Single-Season Innings Record in 5-4 Win Over St. John's - Villanova University Official Athletic Site
The Villanova softball team (21-31, 3-19 BIG EAST) finished off the 2013 season with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the visiting St. John's Red Storm (17-35-1, 7-15 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon. Senior right fielder Julie Smith (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a walk-off single to right field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Villanova their 21st victory of the season. In the win, freshman pitcher Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) broke the single season record for innings pitched with 237 2/3 innings pitched.

Women's Track - Alexandra Wasik Earns All-BIG EAST Honors with Runner-Up Finish in Pole Vault - Villanova University Official Athletic Site
On the second day of the BIG EAST Championships sophomore Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) was the runner-up in the pole vault and junior Emily Lipari (Greenvale, N.Y.) had the fastest overall time in the preliminary heats of the 1500 meters. Their performances were among the highlights for Villanova at the Rutgers Track & Field Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Men's Track - Ellison Repeats as BIG EAST Outdoor Champion in 800 Meters - Villanova University Official Athletic Site
Junior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) successfully defended his title in the 800 meters and also ran a leg on the 4x400 meter relay squad which earned All-BIG EAST honors at the BIG EAST Championships on Sunday afternoon. Villanova wrapped up competition at the Rutgers Track & Field Complex and finished in ninth place in the final team standings. During the conference meet the Wildcats had a total of seven All-BIG EAST honors, including a third place finish in the 4x400 relay.
