Rasaan Stewart commits to Villanova: Perkiomen QB/S joins Wildcats class

The 2014 Villanova football recruiting class is really shaping up in January.

The Wildcats added another big talent to the gridiron yesterday, when Perkiomen Valley safety Rasaan Stewart pulled the trigger for Villanova. ESPN reports that Stewart was holding offers from Pittsburgh, Boston College, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, UConn, FAU, Rutgers, Syracuse and Temple along with a number of FCS schools.

The Perkiomen star is rated three-stars by ESPN and 247 Sports, and two stars by Rivals. He started his career as a running back in ninth grade, but Perkiomen Valley's coaches worked to turn him into their starting QB early on. As a quarterback, he completed 132 of 218 passes for 1,489 yards and ran for another 1,191 yards with 32 touchdowns overall. It was his athleticism that stood out to college coaches, however, and he is expected to compete for a spot in the Wildcats' defensive backfield.

He was named All-Area Player of the Year by the Pottstown Mercury, as a junior and as a senior. According to the Mercury, Penn State, Pitt and Villanova were at the top of his list in the recruiting process, with the Wildcats' winning out in the end.

He is projected to play safety at the college level, but don't be surprised if Villanova gives him a chance under-center eventually, with his experience and success in a similar system in High School.

He is the 14th scholarship athlete to join Nova Football's 2014 class and the 15th known verbal commitment overall. National Signing Day is on Wednesday February 5th and is the first day that high school seniors can sign college letters of intent. The class includes, OL Brandon Hitner, DB Rob Rolle, OL Rick Young, WR Alessandro Padovani, K Steve Weyler, QB Zach Bednarczyk, OL Chris BuchalskiLB Jeff SteebRB Matt Gudzak, DB Mark Clements, DL Eric DrainsLB Ed ShockleyDB Malik Reaves and WR Matt Brown (preferred walk-on).
