Villanova Olympic Sports Roundup: Men's Soccer wins 3-0 shutout of LaSalle

It has been a solid week for Villanova's Olympic Sports.  Let's take a look at some of the top performances of the week.

Men's Soccer (4-4-1)

The Wildcats went 1-1 on the week, beginning with a 1-0 loss to Creighton in their Big East opener.  Despite valiant efforts, Villanova's attack was not enough to score on the relentless Blue Jay defense, who are now 6-1-1.

Villanova made up for it, however, with a sound 3-0 blowout of Big Five challenger LaSalle.  The Wildcats connected in two goals before halftime and never looked back thanks in part to goals from senior Aaron Dennis, Willis Griffiths, and Hayden Harr.

The Wildcats will return to Big East play when they host DePaul on Saturday.

Women's Volleyball (9-9)

The Lady 'Cats went 1-1 this week, mirroring their overall record of 9-9.  Villanova lost to Seton Hall at home, 3-1, to begin the week.  A relentless Pirates attack proved to be too much for the team, even though four different Wildcats recorded double-digit kills in the match.

The team made up for it, however, with a 3-0 shutout of Providence.  The story of the night, however, transcended Volletball.  The team organized its first ever "Spike it to Cancer" event to honor their teammate Gabby Pethokoukis who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in April and declared cancer-free this summer.  The team sold $10 shirts upon entry to the fieldhouse.  Proceeds went to Northwestern's Robert H. Lurie comprehensive cancer center.

The Lady 'Cats will travel to Cincinnati to play Xavier on Friday.

Women's Soccer (3-6-2)

The women's soccer team continued to struggle with a 1-0 loss to Marquette on Sunday.  Marquette scored in the 19th minute, the only goal of the contest behind aggressive defensive play from both teams.

The Wildcats will host Xavier today at 4 PM.

Field Hockey (3-6)

Villanova fell to Rider, 3-1, on Sunday.  Although the teams entered halftime with the score tied 1-1, the Wildcats were unable to find their rhythm in the second half.  The lone goal was scored by senior Abigail Freitag, who now it tied as the leading scorer on the team.

The Lady 'Cats will travel to Old Dominion this Friday.

Men's Golf

The Wildcats competed in the Patriot Intercollegiate Tournament on Monday, and placed 12 of 17 teams at the event finishing +42 over the course of the day.

Villanova will next compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on October 10.
