Villanova 1985 Championship ring put up for auction by Gary McLain

According to Goldin Auctions, former Villanova Wildcat Gary McLain has his 1985 Championship 14k gold ring up for auction. The minimum asking bid was $3000.00, but the current bid is at $6500.00.

Then ring says "National Champions" on the face with a gold "V" with a 10-point diamond inside, the website says. His name is on the right side along with the team's logo, and it says "Family" and "The Big East." The left side says "Villanova" with a gold depiction of St. Thomas of Villanova church. "Unity," "Truth," and "Charity" are engraved between the bell towers. Along the bottom is engraved "Big 5 Champions."

A Chicago Tribune article in 1987 wrote about McLain confessing that he struggled with drug use throughout his college career. He even admits to being on cocaine before a Final Four game that year and at the team's post-championship visit to the White House. A now-recovering addict, he travels to various schools as a motivational speaker.

In the 1985 Championship game, McLain played all 40 minutes with 8 points (3-3), 2 rebounds and 2 assists en route to claiming the MVP of the Final Game.
