Player Preview

JayVaughn has been a constant for Villanova since joining the Wildcats in 2011-12. As a sophomore, he was the team's leading scorer, and last year he was just a fraction of a point from the top. This season shouldn't be much different as the undersized power-forward should help to form one of the Big East's top frontcourt combinations with Daniel Ochefu.

Pinkston has been less and less likely to hang around the perimeter offensively over the years, taking fewer of his attempts from beyond the arc. While his 3-point percentages have declined over three seasons, his overall field goal percentage has risen from 40.8% to 52.1%. He improved in most statistical categories over his last three seasons, however, and led the team in rebounding as a junior as well.

In addition to playing power forward, Pinkston has been trusted to slide over to the 5 when Ochefu has had to come out of games. He may see less time there this season with Darryl Reynolds hopefully developing into a more-capable back-up, but he could still see some time underneath. His previous tendency to play out on the wing means that he may also be flexible enough to slide out to the small forward spot for spells as well.

Best Case: Pinkston retakes his crown as the team's top scorer, using his strength inside and finding some consistency again in his three-point stroke from outside. He continues to rebound well, and is a key player both offensively and defensively.

Worst Case: Bigger power-forwards and teams doubling-up Pinkston drive him out to the perimeter where he is not able to find his stroke with any consistency. His scoring output drops and his frustration affects his defense and rebounding numbers as well. He likely still scores more than most of the Wildcats, however, and can use his strength to battle with bigger players on the inside.
