Matt Gudzak, a 5'11" 190 lb. running back from Toms River East (NJ) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Villanova, the school announced this morning. Last Fall, he impressed by rushing for 1,043 yards on 147 carries (7.1 yards per carry) and scored 14 touchdowns for the Raiders. The senior ran for 1,159 yards and 13 more touchdowns as a junior.
Matt Gudzak committed to Villanova in mid-December, becoming the ninth verbal commitment in the class of 2014 at the time. Here is the depth chart at running back entering 2014:
Class | Name | Height | Weight |
---|---|---|---|
Senior | Kevin Monangai | 5'8" | 215 lbs. |
Senior | Austin Medley | 5'11" | 205 lbs. |
Junior | Javon White | 5'11" | 185 lbs. |
Junior | Gary Underwood | 5'11" | 210 lbs. |
Next season, Austin Medley and Kevin Monangai will likely start as seniors, while rising juniors Javon White and Gary Underwood can also be expected to see action. Additionally, Jamal Abdur-Rahman, a rising redshirt junior who is listed as a wide receiver will also receive a number of carries for the 'Cats. As those players inch closer and closer to graduation, however, the Wildcats will be looking for options like Gudzak in the running game.
Don't be surprised if his role is minor or nonexistent as a freshman. The depth chart thins significantly in Fall 2015, so he will see plenty of time on the field by then.
Gudzak also played Safety for TR East and participated on the Lacrosse team in the Spring.
