Villanova Olympic sports roundup: Volleyball wins thrilling Big East opener

Overtime thrillers for Men's and Women's Soccer

Field Hockey (3-5)

The Lady 'Cats finished 1-1 on the week, beginning with a 3-0 loss to Delaware.  Although the halftime score was 0-0, the Blue Hens quickly caught fire while Villanova failed to connect on their nine shot attempts.

Villanova made up for their loss, however, with a 5-2 win over St. Joe's on Sunday.  With only four minutes left to play, the score was 3-2 in favor of the Wildcats, but the Hawks were unable to stop the potent Villanova offense in the final minutes.  Freshman Francesco Bello recorded a two-goal, five point performance on her way to being named to the Big East Honor Roll for the week.

They will face Rider next on Sunday at noon.

Volleyball (8-8)

After a disappointing showing at the Villanova Classic, Women's Volleyball righted the ship with a 3-1 performance this week.  The Lady 'Cats went 2-1 during the Big Five Challenge over the weekend with a 3-0 win against Penn and a 3-1 win over LaSalle.

The most critical victory, however, came on Wednesday in the team's Big East opener.  In a thrilling five-set match against St. John's, Villanova won the final set 15-13.  Junior Colleen Hickey registered a career-high 14 kills in the game, while freshman libido Allison Fitzgerald recorded a team and career-high 32 digs.

The Wildcats will face off against the Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday in their second consecutive Big East home game.

Women's Soccer (3-5-2)

The Lady 'Cats managed to record a win, a tie, and a loss in only a one week time span.  They began the week with a double-overtime tie against Towson.  Although seven different Wildcats attempted shots on goal, but they were all unsuccessful.

The ensuing game against #21 ranked West Virginia ended poorly for the Wildcats, losing 0-4. After the Mountaineers opened up a 2-0 lead at halftime, the Wildcats couldn't make up the deficit behind stingy defensive play from West Virginia.

The Women's Soccer team made up for the loss, however, with a 1-0 win over Butler in their first game of Big East play.  Junior Christina Camassa scored her first goal of the season, the only point for a Wildcat team that was led by its stingy defensive play.

They will be back in action Sunday at Marquette.

Men's Soccer (3-3-1)

Both of Villanova's games this week took extra overtime periods to decide the final outcome.

On Saturday, the Wildcats ended a home against against Monmouth after a 1-1 score in double overtime.  Senior Aaron Dennis continued his stellar play with the only goal for the team.

Just a few days later, the 'Cats traveled to Bethlehem, Pa to play the Lehigh Mountain Hawks.  This game ended more favorably for the Wildcats when sophomore Max Kroshwitz ended the drought with a penalty kick at 97:54 in the game.  Villanova finished the game with a 1-0 win, and will head back home to play Creighton on Saturday.

Men's Golf

Villanova finished 15 of 18 in the Rutger's Invitational Tournament last weekend.  The team recorded a score of 297 in the final three rounds to improve their place from 17 to 15 over the final day of the tournament.

The Wildcats will play at the Patriot Intercollegiate over the weekend in Lorton, Va.
