Advanced Stats Preview: Seton Hall

A brief look at the Advanced Stats for Villanova's next opponent, Seton Hall.

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

After staving off Butler (thus making NYE a celebratory drunk, instead of a somber one), Villanova moves on to Seton Hall. The Pirates are enjoying something they haven't experienced in a while: success. They currently stand at 11-2, despite having one of the youngest rosters in the country.

Continuing the trend that Corollary hopefully started, below are some pertinent advanced stats for the upcoming game. Comments will be few and far between, and this serves to better inform our ever-expanding fan base in what to look for 'under the hood.'

All data has been borrowed from KenPom and Hoop-Math.com, as Corollary's scraper doesn't have enough games involving SHU on file at the moment. Once again, the season is very young and so the sample size is subsequently too small to hold real weight. However, 13 games is a healthy enough sample to at least LOOK at the stats.  A quick glance shows that Seton Hall's early season wins are more than just luck, and they actually have a decent basketball team this year. Saturday should be fun, in a 'let them hang in it for a half, get their hopes up, and then run them off the floor in the second half to win by 15' type of way.

SIRL

  • Sterling Gibbs is filling it up from deep (53.3% from 3), with 28.1% of threes taken off the dribble
  • Isaiah Whitehead's offensive output will be missed, but he isn't very efficient (40% from 2, 38.1% from deep) for a high volume shooter
  • Angel Delgado is a monster on the boards, ranking 16th nationally in OR% and 57th in DR%
  • Jaren Sina likes taking threes (65 attempts) much more than he likes making threes (24 makes, good for 36.9%)

Quick Game Plan

  • Let Sina shoot (put Arch on him!)
  • Don't let Gibbs shoot (put Hart/Ennis on him!)
  • Box out Delgado on defense (I'm looking at you, JVP)
  • Limit turnovers
  • Make them earn points at the line instead of conceding lay ups
  • Utilize our huge edge in experience
