Villanova volleyball fights hard, but takes two tough losses

The 2 losses drops the WIldcats to 21-7 on the season and 11-4 in Big East play

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

Over the weekend, the Villanova University women's volleyball team took their last road trip of the regular season, taking on Butler and Xavier. On Friday, the WIldcats took on the Butler Bulldogs in Indianapolis, falling 3-1 i (25-22, 19-25, 25-14, 25-22).

Considering the win propelled Butler to 10-16 on the season and 6-7 in Big East play, the loss was certainly unexpected. However, the Bulldogs were sharp offensively recording a 66% attack percentage in comparison to the Wildcats' 59%. As the box score indicates, the 'Cats certainly did not go down without a fight, as 3 different Wildcats had double digit kills and 4 different WIldcats had double digit digs.

Offensively, Claire Crutchfield led the way for Villanova with 15 kills while Allie Loitz had 13, and Amanda Pederson-Henry had 10. Defensively, Michelle Adams led the way with 19 digs, Loitz had 16, and Allison Fitzgerald and Emma Petit each had 11.

The Wildcats then traveled to CIncinatti for their match against the Xavier Musketeers. The Musketeers prevailed in a highly contested match 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 15-10). This was expected to be a highly contested match, as the Musketeers overall record of 15-10  is rather misleading because they are 11-3 in conference play. Both teams executed very well offensively throughout the match, as Villanova had a 64% match attack percentage. while Xavier's was 72%.

However, Xavier was lights out in the last set, recording a 90% attack percentage, which proved to be too much for the Wildcats. Allie Loitz and Gabby Pethekoukis led the way for Villanova's offense with 15 and 14 kills respectively. Defensively, four WIldcats had at least 10 digs, including Allie Loitz (18), Allison Fitzgerald (15), Emma Petit (12), and Lauren Carpenter (10).

Villanova returned home this week after the weekend. Their final three matches of the season will all be in Jake Nevin Field House, where the Wildcats are a perfect 9-0 on the season. They will take on the Seton Hall Pirates this Saturday during Homecoming Weekend at 7:00.
