The Sun's Arizin: Villanova cross country earns Nationals invite

The men are sending three runners, and the entire women's team is going. Plus, they dedicated a new facility!

Happy Monday, 'Nova Nation! The cross country programs had a big weekend at regionals, with both the men (their big dogs) and the women (the entire team) earning invites to the XC Nationals. That program just keeps on rolling.

In basketball news, the Big East got off to a 9-2 start (Thanks a lot Georgetown! Way to go Marquette!) but this week the real test comes with the Gavitt Games. No bias, there should be some great games. Including that rock fight between St. John's and Rutgers.

The teams and individuals that will make up the field for next weeks NCAA Championships were announced on Saturday afternoon and Villanova will be represented by three members of the mens cross country team. Junior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) and seniors Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) each qualified as individuals as a result of their performances at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon.

Following a strong performance at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday afternoon, the Villanova womens cross country team learned on Saturday that it had earned an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships. The national meet takes place next Saturday, November 21, at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The womens race that day begins at 12 p.m.

On a day that celebrated the rich tradition of the Villanova track & field and cross country programs, head coaches Marcus O'Sullivan and Gina Procaccio along with a number of Villanova dignitaries hosted a reception to dedicate the program's brand new office space in Jake Nevin Field House. The completely redesigned office suite was made possible by a generous donation from Villanova alum and longtime track & field supporter Robert F. Moran `72.
