The Wildcats did all they could to avoid history

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

We all heard the saying "Villanova is a second half team." So we had to wonder: would the `Cats drag their heels out of the gate and need to play catch up through the rest of the game?

That was never an issue.

Dylan Ennis hit a three pointer, Villanova drew a personal foul, and they never looked back.

The `Cats used JavVaughn Pinkston and Daniel Ochefu early on in the game, then sat back and shot the long ball to go on and win 93-52 against the Lafayette Leopards.

The Wildcats avoid being the first 1-seed to lose to a 16-seed.

JVP lead the pack by scoring 6 of the first 13 points for the Wildcats. Lafayette's Dan Trist scored answered with 4 straight buckets to bring the Leopards to within single digits. A three pointer by Monty Boykins brought the game to 21-13, but that's the closest the game would ever get.

Trist lead all scoring with 18 points on 8-16 shooting. He also grabbed 9 boards (5 offensive). Seth Hinrichs had 13 points. The next closest scorer was Boykins, who had 5.

Villanova shot 63.2% from the field and 50% (11-22) from beyond the arc. Every starter scored in double digits, with Dylan Ennis leading the way with 16.

Lafayette called timeouts on multiple occasions to try and slow down Ochefu's dominance underneath. They called their 5th and final timeout with 12:34 left in the game.

The Wildcats came to a halt towards the end of the game. Ennis hit a three to give `Nova an 84-39 lead with 9:00 to go. That's 45 points, by the way. From that point, Villanova only scored 9 points. The team went into clock-killing mode and began pulling their starters to rest them for Saturday's Round of 32 game.

Kris Jenkins had double digits off the bench; he had 10 on 4-9 shooting. Josh Hart gave the `Cats some energy off the bench with 4 offensive rebounds.

The Wildcats outrebounded the Leopards 33-25. The `Cats assisted on 22 of their 35 made field goals, and had 8 steals and forced 15 turnovers. The `Cats entered the second half with 16 of their points off of turnovers. The Leopards only had 4 of those.

To end a perfect game, the Bench Mob finished on the court.

Villanova will face the winner of North Carolina State Wolfpack and LSU Tigers on Saturday.
