Payton Pritchard, a 6'0" point guard from West Linn (OR), has decommitted from the Oklahoma Sooners. Jeff Borzello and Jeff Goodman of ESPN were the first to report the news.
Per Pritchard's father, his son wants to make sure he's making the right decision.
"He just wants to be 100 percent sure. He's a young kid, and we want him to [be] 100 percent comfortable," Terry Pritchard said of his son's decommitment. "He's been thinking about it for two or three weeks. And if he was going to do it, he should probably do it before the July period."
Villanova was in hot pursuit of Pritchard before he committed to the Sooners in November 2014. The Wildcats received an unofficial visit for Hoops Mania about a month before his commitment. Villanova was a finalist for his commitment along with Oregon, Wisconsin and Gonzaga.
With Omari Spellman already in the fold, Villanova will likely take just 1-2 more players in the 2016 class. Juwan Durham, Eddie Ekiyor, Lamar Stevens and Dylan Painter (still waiting on an offer) are targets in the frontcourt, while shooting guard Kevin Huerter recently picked up an offer in the backcourt and should visit soon.
With a logjam of guards and Jalen Brunson coming off a world-beating performance in Greece, a ball-handling guard doesn't seem like a priority for Jay Wright in this cycle. It will be interesting to see if Villanova gets back involved with Pritchard - if they do, maybe Wright feels like Brunson will only be around for a year or two.
Should Villanova start recruiting Payton Pritchard again?
