Some good news today as Omari Spellman has been named to USA Basketball's Men's Junior National Team Minicamp. Spellman, a 5-star prospect, is currently the lone verbal commitment for Villanova in the class of 2016.
The 6'8" big man, who will play at St. Thomas Moore this year, will join more than 50 other prep athletes for 3 days in the first week of October at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. [Full Roster]
According to USA Basketball, the minicamp is "used to continue player evaluations and to get a head start on preparations for several 2016 international competitions, including in the 19th annual Nike Hoop Summit, FIBA U17 World
Don Showalter (Iowa City HS) will guide the mini-camp in October. He has been the head coach of the USA's Junior National Team since 2009 and has claimed 7 championships.
This past summer, both Jalen Brunson and Eric Paschall were invited to try out to for the FIBA U19 team. While Paschall didn't make the cut, Bruson went on to win MVP honors in Greece as the USA won gold. Having Spellman getting in to the USA Basketball pipeline is great news for his continued development and career.
