College basketball rankings, week 3: Villanova moves up to #2

‘Cats climb, but the Kentucky ‘Cats are tops.

The AP released their third Top 25 poll for the 2016-17 season and the reigning national champion Villanova Wildcats have stepped up to the #2 spot.

Kentucky came in at #1 collecting 40 first place votes. ‘Nova tallied 20 first place votes and third-place Indiana collected another. North Carolina and Kansas rounded out the top 5.

Villanova (5-0) went through the week with victories over (#18) Purdue and then Western Michigan, Wake Forest, and UCF en route to the Championship of the Charleston Classic.

Last week’s #1 team, Duke, dropped to #6.

The BIG EAST was also represented by Xavier at #9 and Creighton at #12 with Butler and Seton Hall receiving votes.

‘Nova returns to action on Wednesday when they host the College of Charleston.
