According to a release on the USA Basketball website, coach Jay Wright will serve as an assistant coach this summer for the USA Men's Select Team. He will join San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Ime Udoka and Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
The Select Team is comprised of current of former NCAA athletes with no more than a few years of NBA experience. The goal of the training camp, according to National Team managing director Jerry Colangelo, is to give these young stars "valuable experience at the USA Basketball National Team level." He goes on to say that "for many of the Select Team players this is a continuation of their USA Basketball experiences and for others it is an introduction into our pipeline."
In essence, Wright will be a scout for the Men's National Team.
One familiar name on this year's Select Team is Creighton alum Doug McDermott, who had competed in the U19 World Championship in 2011 and the World University Games in 2013, to name a few. Another Select Team member, Providence grad Kris Dunn, will be getting his first taste of USA Basketball.
The Select Team Training Camp lasts from July 18-21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the Men's National Team training alongside.
