Has Jay Wright found a diamond in the rough?

Archbishop Wood (Pa.) guard Collin Gillespie has committed to the Villanova Wildcats. He just announced the decision via Twitter.

Jay Wright is still in market for another guard as part of the 2017 class and with Jordan Tucker looking likely bound for Indiana, the ‘Cats staff pounced to secure their third verbal commitment in the class. The 6’2” 180 pound Gillespie is in the midst of a fantastic senior season and has blossomed from a D2-level prospect to one that is now getting looks from some high-major schools.

Here’s (part of) the scouting report from City of Basketball Love:

“A fearless competitor with a game to match, Gillespie has become one of the best guards in the Philadelphia region during the first half of his senior season. Has shown the ability to be a full-time point guard with strong on-ball skills, terrific court vision and the ability to make difficult passes on the money. Strong outside shooter both off the catch and the bounce, and a much-improved creator and finisher as well.”

City of Basketball Love has an exclusive interview with Gillespie, so make sure to check out the full story to get Gillespie’s take on his commitment.

With Phil Booth’s future up in the air and Jalen Brunson always a threat to leave early, bringing in a prospect like Gillespie makes sense. While he could be a candidate to redshirt his freshman season, the insurance he can provide in the backcourt would be valuable asset to Villanova. And given his meteoric rise, he may even be a contributor from day one.

Here are highlights from a recent game where Gillespie went off to the tune of 27 points, 7 assists and 8 rebounds.
