Villanova Basketball #TBT for January 19th

We remember some tough losses, Darrun Hilliard, and beating the Hall and ‘Cuse.

Every Thursday we’ll take a look back at that day in Villanova Basketball to remember the good times (and possibly not so good times). We’ll look at some numbers, opponents, highlight a game or two, and use this as a place for Nova Nation to relive some of their favorite games. We’ve pulled games from the last 60+ years, all the way back to 1950, so there should be something for everyone. Let’s get to it!

VUHoops #TBT for January 19th

Overall Record: 9-11, 1-6 vs ranked teams. Ugh, not the best day for the Wildcats. Again, we fall on a day where a large majority of the games (16 of 21) were played away from home, but it’s still not great. Even in Nova’s 2014-15 season when they only lost 3 games all season, today was the UGLY 20 point loss at Georgetown. At least we got this sweet Darrun Hilliard promo out of it.

Most Frequent Opponent: Seton Hall three times (2-1). Villanova just dropped a 30 point beat-down on everyone’s favorite team to hate, and they’ve been doing so for quite some time. The lone loss to the Hall today came in 1993 at the Izod Center when the Cats fell to the #10 Pirates by just 5 points. In the two wins, Nova won by a combined 28. Again, 30 point beat-down :)

Most Intriguing Opponent: Notre Dame in 1982 (W, 48-46). It isn’t just that Villanova lost a lot of games on this day, it’s that they lost a lot of close games. They had five one possession games on the 19th, and all but this one against the Irish were a loss. In fact two of those close losses were on the road against ranked teams. But in this one, senior Aaron Howard hit a baseline jumper with three seconds remaining to win it for the Wildcats.

Highlighted Game: It was tough to find a winning highlight for today with all the losses. But who doesn’t like beating up on Syracuse? Nova’s last win on the 19th was at the Carrier Dome, and while the Orange have obviously conspired with ESPN to hide the footage of their 10 point loss, our friend Sean Donovan has this 2008 season highlight. Plenty of ‘Cuse in this one as Nova also beat them by 19 in the first round of the Big East Tournament on their way to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
