For a third consecutive season, the Villanova Wildcats are ranked #1 in the AP Poll. This comes after Nova’s impressive win over Gonzaga and a gutsy win over LaSalle to remain one of only seven undefeated teams in the country.
Villanova jumped over previously third ranked Michigan State to claim the top spot in the country, including 41 of 65 first place votes. #2 MSU pulled in 19 first place votes, while also undefeated #5 Arizona State received the remaining 5.
The other members of the Big East also saw a rise in the polls. Xavier broke into the Top 10 for the first time this season, ranking #10 overall. Seton Hall now ranks #15 in the country as well. Creighton (79 points) comes in as essentially the #26 school in the country. Also worth noting, Georgetown received 0 points this week after losing their only voter from last week’s poll.
Not only is Villanova back at #1, but with Kansas falling to #13, Villanova now holds the longest active streak in the AP Poll’s Top 10 at 35 Weeks. This ranking also ties Villanova with Georgetown for weeks at #1 in the AP Poll in program history (each have 12).
Helping Villanova’s SOS, Gonzaga held at #12 while Tennessee moved up to #20. Villanova will next play against Temple on Wednesday as they now look to hold onto their #1 ranking.
