The Dallas Mavericks have signed former Villanova Wildcats guard Maalik Wayns, per a release from the team. Most are speculating that this will be a training camp deal for now, but no further details have been confirmed as of this post.
Wayns will be returning to the NBA for the first time since 2014. He played last season for Maccabi Rishon in Israel where he averaged 15.1 ppg, 4.1 apg, and 3.4 rpg, including 41.3% from behind the arc. He previously had stints in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.
Our colleagues over at Mavs Money Ball seem mixed on Wayns’ prospects to stick with the team, and surmise he could end up on their G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends once training camp concludes.
I didn’t get a chance to see Maalik in the Summer League, but this is great news for him. Best of luck to Maalik, and here’s hoping he can lock down a regular season roster spot with the Mavs.
