The Villanova Wildcats retained their #1 ranking in the AP Poll today, tying now #5 Duke for the most weeks atop the college basketball poll this season. The Wildcats received 63 out of 65 first place votes, with #2 Virginia and #3 Purdue each getting one of the remaining two. It’s Villanova’s 16th week at #1 in just three seasons, and that already ties them for 16th all-time in #1 rankings, passing DePaul and UMass.
With #9 Michigan State falling out of the Top 5, Villanova now owns the longest active streaks for weeks at #1 (2), weeks in the Top 5 (10), and weeks in the Top 10 (40). This also marks their 87th week all-time in the AP Poll’s Top 5, one more than their rival and next opponent Georgetown.
The Big East had a down week, dropping to just 3 teams as Creighton fell from the Top 25. Xavier moved down to #11 after their up and down week including a loss at Villanova, while Seton Hall dropped to #19 after their road loss to Marquette. Creighton is now 26th, and is the lone member of the Big East in the “Also Receiving Votes” category.
Villanova will be on the road this week as they play Georgetown on Wednesday, followed by a late non-conference game at UConn on Saturday.
