Opportunities for the VU Hoops Community to give back

Let’s not forget that it’s not just basketball season, it’s the season of giving

Happy Friday Nova Nation! As I was putting together today’s links, I was shocked at how few there were. We’re literally about to play in MSG against UConn, and I could only find one article posted as of Thursday. But sometimes that helps me find the best inspiration for these daily pieces, and today was no different.

Despite the fact that UConn has one of its best chances for Dan Hurley to earn a win that could help his team’s chances at making the NCAA Tournament this season, that wasn’t their focus yesterday. Instead, they took a break from game prep to go to a local elementary school and read to children. It’s a simple gesture, but one that means so much to kids who realize that some of the people they idolize were just like them, maybe still are. More importantly, it shows them that no one’s too big, famous, or important to give back. And that’s what charity does, inspires light in others.

Villanova has a great track record with giving back, and I just wanted to take a minute to reflect on that this holiday season. The greek life on campus all have charitable associations. For those that can’t afford to monetary donations, campus ministry offers programs that allow volunteers to donate their time and effort instead. Everyone has something they’re passionate about, and most times there can be a charitable aspect that goes hand in hand with that passion.

We do a pretty good job filling up the comments section around here, but today I ask that we get a few threads going about your favorite charities or volunteer stories. We have a great community here, and I’m sure that some of them would like to give back but don’t know where to direct that instinct. Any suggestions for worthy charities or volunteer opportunities would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for sharing with us how you give back to your community, and I hope some of you will be inspired to donate your time or resources to a worthy cause.
