To start, the staff of VUhoops ran into some scheduling issues this weekend and were very short-handed. We apologize for any delays or lack of articles.
Despite a 27-point performance from Collin Gillespie, the Villanova Wildcats were bounced by the Baylor Bears in the championship game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational. Saddiq Bey contributed 16 points while freshman Jeremiah Robinson-Earl poured in 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the losing effort.
The ‘Cats got off to a strong start, going toe to toe with a tough and experienced Baylor team. Collin Gillespie had the offense humming and the Wildcats took a narrow three point lead into the break.
The second half was a different story as the young Wildcats’ defense struggled to defend against Baylor’s guards and outside shooters. The narrow Wildcat lead disappeared and Baylor, riding the hot shooting of MaCio Teague (4-6 from three) and Jared Butler (4-8 from three), began to pull away with about 3 minutes left in the contest. Unable to get a much needed stop on defense, the Wildcats were on their heels for the remainder of the game and could not close the gap.
Overall, this game feels like a missed opportunity. Although Baylor is a strong team and a victory was never certain, the Wildcats were in control for parts of the game and were just unable to close it out.
The ‘Cats are back in action next Sunday, December 1, to kick off Big 5 play against La Salle at the Pavilion.
