Happy Tuesday Nova Nation! For the third consecutive week, Justin Moore has been named your Big East Freshman of the Week. Given the level of competition, even on his own team, that’s a remarkable feat for the young guard. It’s even more impressive when you look at the circumstances around these honors.
First off, the streak coincides with Moore’s move from the starting five into the 6th man role. Since moving to the bench, Moore is now the leading scorer of any non-starter in the Big East. During this run of Big East honors he’s averaging 18 points, 2.25 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.5 steals. Part of the reason for the great numbers is that despite moving to the bench, he’s still played 30+ minutes in each of his last four games. Prior to coming off the bench, he had played 30+ minutes just once in six starts.
The other impressive aspect of his run of awards is that in two of the three weeks he only played in one game. Not that he has any control over the schedule, but it’s hard for a freshman to remain that consistent over a three week stretch, especially when in two of those weeks you only have one shot at putting up a good game. Granted, the level of competition hasn’t been exactly stellar. Through this stretch the best team Villanova has played was Penn, and they rank outside the Top 100 in the NET. Still, this is an amazing accomplishment for one of Villanova’s stars of the future. Hopefully he can keep the streak going when the Wildcats host #1 Kansas on Saturday.
In other “news”, Villanova vs Kansas is one of the highlights of the college basketball week, a few NBA Wildcats have trade rumors surrounding them, and the NET makes its season debut. Enjoy!
