Happy Wednesday Nova Nation! I hope those of you in the Mid-West and Northeast area are bundled up warm and cozy as we prepare for another wave of snow. Grab a blanket, make some hot coco, and settle in to watch Villanova take on a classic Big East rival in Georgetown.
Yes, this is still a rivalry despite the fact that Villanova has won twelve of their last thirteen games against the Hoyas by an average margin of over 12 points. And yes, that includes Georgetown’s lone win that was a 20 point blowout back in 2015. This game hasn’t been “single digits close” since 2016, and the final margin of victory has only been less than 10 twice over that thirteen game stretch.
What I’m trying to say is get ready for a blow out, one way or the other.
But again, that doesn’t mean this isn’t still a rivalry. Despite Villanova being the dominant force as of late, they still trail in the all-time series 36-39. And it’s not like the Wildcats didn’t used to get knocked around by the Hoyas. Despite all these recent blowouts, the average margin of victory in the all-time series is less than a point, and it’s in Georgetown’s favor. In fact, it’s the smallest all-time margin of victory Villanova has with any school currently in the Big East.
What I’m trying to say is get ready for a nail biter, one way or the other.
In their matchup earlier this season, the Hoyas lost their best player to early foul trouble, couldn’t get any scoring from half of their dynamic freshman backcourt, and got dominated on the boards. Villanova had a career day from it’s third leading scorer, got 14 rebounds from an improving sophomore, and had it’s senior class lead the way with a combined 38 points. Despite the final score, it was still a pretty intense game that could play out very differently.
What I’m trying to say is it should be a great game, no matter how close the final score is.
