Happy Monday Nova Nation! For those of you that have tuned out of the college basketball podcast scene, you may have missed last week’s sit down between Villanova’s student paper and Collin Gillespie. The Villanovan’s podcast, Podcats, talked to Nova’s lone returning captain about a number of topics, one of which was what’s expected of him and the rest of the juniors next season.
For as young as the team was last season, next year’s team will be even less experienced. Villanova is only returning four players with starter experience, or that played major roles in the rotation last season. The team will have no seniors, no players with a redshirt year, and outside of the four players I mentioned, the other seven have played a combined 253 minutes (and that’s just between two guys at about 7 minutes per game combined).
But it’s clear that Wright has already started preparing the junior class to be leaders next season. It was likely a factor in naming Gillespie a captain on this year’s team. It’s probably another reason so much time and effort was put into the development of Jermaine Samuels after he lost so much time last year to a broken hand. Wright will need this class to lead what will be an uber-talented squad next season not just in games, but early on while instilling the core concepts of Villanova basketball. Personally, I think they’re up to the challenge.
In other “news”, we continue to follow Kyle Lowry in the playoffs, Eric Paschall is headed to the NBA combine, and the NCAA finally noticed that somethings happening at Arizona. Enjoy!
