It’s day one of our tournament, and we’re starting with the five play-in games to cut our field down to 32 teams. While overall these teams may not be as talented as others in this tournament, there are still a number of absolute studs in this round. Better than studs actually, we’re talking about some of the greatest Wildcats of All-Time. Scottie Reynolds, Randy Foye, Mikal Bridges, and Doug West will all try to carry their teams on to the next round. At least Phil Booth gets Daniel Ochefu and the Grace Brothers.
Check back tomorrow to see who advanced and vote on the first round of the Wright Region, but now let’s get right into the matchups!

#8 Worldwide Wildcats vs #9 North Jersey: Newark Region
It’s the international flair against the best of Newark in our first matchup of the tournament. Mouphtaou Yarou, a member of Villanova’s 1,000 point club, leads the international squad. Meanwhile, Randy Foye’s jersey hangs from the rafters as both a Newark native and one of the greatest Wildcats of all-time. Who will lead their team to victory?

#8 Virginia vs #9 Northeast Philadelphia
It’s another matchup of an all-time great and one of Nova’s fan favorites. Scottie Reynolds leads a Virginia team that also includes current player Brandon Slater and 2018 National Champion Matt Kennedy. The Northeast Philly team is led by a member of the 1971 team that lost to UCLA in the Championship, Hank Siemiontkowski.

Some of your favorite Nova players are featured in this play-in matchup. For South Philly you have current Wildcat Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, fan favorite and famed director Tony Chennault, and former Nova star from the late 1940’s Joseph Hannan. Oh, and don’t forget Red Klotz, who would go on to head the Washington Generals who toured with the Harlem Globetrotters. On the flip side is a pair of Nation Champions in Mikal Bridges (2016 and 2018) and walk-on favorite Kevin Rafferty (2016).

#7 Baltimore & Northern Maryland vs #10 Northeast Pennsylvania
This is the lone 7 v 10 matchup of the play-in round. The Baltimore team is full of players you know and love. Phil Booth is the winningest player in Villanova History, Daniel Ochefu helped lead the team into the Golden Era of Villanova Basketball, and the Grace brothers may be two of the most beloved bench mob members of all-time. Northeast Pennsylvania (aka the greater Scranton region), doesn’t have anyone who played in the last 40 years. If you like underdogs, this is your team.

#8 Western Pennsylvania vs #9 Pacific Coast
This one is a matchup of two Nova players turned coaches under Jay Wright. For Western Pennsylvania, it’s Doug West. West actually played under Wright when he was an assistant for Rollie Massimino. West would go on to coach under Wright at Villanova, and was an assistant on the 2009 Final Four team. For the Pacific Coast, you have Oregon’s Baker Dunleavy. Dunleavy played his entire career for Wright as a walk-on before joining his staff for eight seasons, which included the 2016 National Championship.
