Welcome to the 4th annual VU Hoops Summer Tournament! This has become a staple of the off-season, as we spend the month of July pitting some of the greatest Villanova players of all-time against each other in an NCAA style bracket. But instead of actually playing the matchups, we leave it to you, the Nova Nation, to vote on who advances all the way to the Championship!
In the past we’ve done your favorite player, favorite class, and a 3-on-3 tournament. Every year like clockwork, Ryan Arcidiacono has walked away with the Summer Tournament Title. That’s great news for the North Philly Suburb team, because this year we’re going to be putting together teams of players from their hometowns in the aptly named “2019 Hometown Heroes Tournament”.
Creating the Teams
This year’s tournament will see the largest rosters ever in our Summer Tournament series. Each team consists of 7-10 players from the same “region”. I put that in quotes because the areas we’re drawing these teams from differs greatly. Villanova’s recruiting has traditionally been focused in Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, and Washington DC. In fact, 23 of this year’s 37 teams come from those areas. But there are some players that we had to cluster together from much larger regions to meet the 7-player minimum. So while we do list the hometowns of every player, you’ll see some teams drawing from a whole state, or several states, or even everywhere outside the United States.
But back to those hot-bed recruiting areas, there were sometimes too many players from a single area to fit into the team that made the most sense. West Philadelphia alone had to be split into two teams, and the city of Philadelphia is broken into 7 teams (not counting suburbs). So if you see a player or two on a team that may be a little bit of a stretch, know that we did our best to create these teams as close to their geographical hometowns as we could.
Also, if one of your favorite players is missing, know that there were some players we couldn’t find the home town or high school for. Only players we were able to confirm were included in this tournament (314 to be exact), to ensure that we were getting the best geographical results we could. In fact, here’s a map of all the Hometown’s (and Philly High Schools) in this year’s tournament:
The Bracket
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/18297823/Full_Bracket.jpg)
The hardest thing to do every year is seed the bracket. We get as many opinions as we can, combine them with some statistical analysis, and try not to let recency bias blind us! I can say that this year we leaned more heavily on the career statistics for seeding purposes to try to avoid personal opinion or bias. We just let the chips fall where they may, so with that said let’s get into each region of the tournament.
The Wright Region
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/18297830/Wright_Region.jpg)
The Wright Region is led by a subset of the West Philly Hometown Heroes who attended West Philadelphia and West Catholic High Schools. Put more simply, some of the greatest Villanova players of the 50’s and 60’s. We’re talking about Hubie White, Jim Huggard, Jim Washington, Jack Devine, and Jimmy Smith to name a few. If they were before your time, do some research because this is the #1 overall ranked team in the tournament.
Other teams to keep any eye on is M&M (Massachusetts & Maine) that features Dwayne McClain, Mark Plansky, Michael Bradley, and Jermaine Samuels. Central Jersey West features the Melchionni brothers, Malik Allen, and John Olive. The Top 4 is rounded out with one of the North Jersey teams (Edison to Elizabeth), and is lead by Mike Nardi, John Celestand, and the Miller brothers. And of course, never count out the North Philly Suburbs with the trio of Arcidiaconos (one goes by “Gillespie”), Joe Crews, Nick Maguire, and future Nova star Eric Dixon.
Then of course are the players that are going to try to put their entire teams on their back and carry them through the early rounds. That would include Joe Lord and Reggie Robinson from the Northwest Philly Suburbs. Tim Thomas and Rory Sparrow both hail from Paterson, NJ. And don’t forget the play-in game where Randy Foye and his Newark team will take on Mouphtaou Yarou and the best of the International players.
The Massimino Region
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/18297949/Massimino_Region.jpg)
The Massimino Region features the surprisingly powerful team from the Southeast, made up of players from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas. Players like Howard Porter, Johnny Jones, James Bell, and Chuck Kornegay. But to make it out of the region they may have to go through the local favorites from North Philly, including Kyle Lowry, Jason Lawson, Jonathan Haynes, and Sherwin Raiken.
Other teams to keep an eye on in this region include Brooklyn, featuring Curtis Sumpter, JayVaughn Pinkston, Stewart Granger, and Antonio Pena. The 4 Seed is Chris Lane’s own Connecticut and Rhode Island team, with the Pinone brothers and a pair of Harolds in Pressley and Jensen.
The region also features two of the stars from Villanova’s 2018 National Championship. Jalen Brunson leads the Lake Michigan team which includes Ricky Wright and Larry Moody. There’s also Donte DiVincenzo, part of Delaware & South Jersey with Chris Ford and Will Sheridan.
Rounding out the region are again some teams with elite players that will have to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Darrun Hilliard will star on the Allentown to Harrisburg team. Scottie Reynolds is the big name on the Virginia squad. And finally, Northeast Philly will be relying on a member of the famous 1971 Final Four team, Hank Siemiontkowski.
The Kraft Region
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/18298020/Kraft_Region.jpg)
The Kraft Region could feature some of the best showdowns in the early rounds of the tournament. The region’s #1 Seed is Central Philadelphia, featuring Bob Schafer, Joe Ryan, Maalik Wayns, and Brooks Ricca. But in a voting tournament, they’re going to have their hands full with possibly the best combination of “Jay Wright Era” talent in the whole tournament in #2 seed Maryland: D.C Suburbs. We’re talking Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins, Dante Cunningham, Dwayne Anderson, and Saddiq Bey. They’ll be a tough out.
The region also features our other West Philly team, starring Wali Jones, Richie Moore, and Jim Mooney. It also has the New York City team with Larry Hennessy, Eric Paschall, Tom Brennan, and Whitey Rigsby. In the first round, they’ll face the players of the central and southern states, including Kerry Kittles, Gary Buchanan, and future Nova star Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. They’ll also need to contend with Central Jersey East’s combo of Alex Bradley and another future Nova star, Bryan Antoine.
At the bottom of the bracket are again the teams with just one or two stars to try and pull them through. Tom Ingelsby will head the West Philly Suburbs. 1950’s star Joseph Hannan will lead the South Philadelphia team. And NBA lottery pick Mikal Bridges will be the big name on the West Chester Region team.
The Severance Region
:no_upscale()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/18298092/Severance_Region.jpg)
Our final #1 seed comes from the nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. That team includes Wildcat stars like the Herron brothers, George Raveling, and George Leftwich. On the other side of the bracket they’ll face a very tough team from the Bronx with Allan Ray, Ed Pinckney, Corey Fisher, and Gary Massey.
Another strong NYC area team will be from Long Island, with Thomas G. Brennan, Tom Greis, Gary McLain, and Jason Fraser. The #4 seed in the region is Northwest Philadelphia, and features Paul Arizin, Alvin Williams, and Chubby Cox. They’ll face the North Jersey NYC Suburb team with Tom Sienkiewicz, Kenny Wilson, and the “Bayonne Bomber” Corey Stokes. Wrapping up the teams that avoided the play-in round is the NY State & Ohio squad, including Eric Eberz, Greg Woodard, and Omari Spellman.
The Severance Region is the only part of the bracket with ten teams, and therefore will have two play-in games. In the first game, Phil Booth and Daniel Ochefu will lead the Baltimore & Northern Maryland team against Northeast Pennsylvania, the lowest seeded team in the tournament. The other play-in will feature a pair of former Wright assistant coaches, as Doug West and the Western Pennsylvania team take on Baker Dunleavy and Pacific Coast.
How To Vote
Every day this month, starting tomorrow, we’ll have several matchups from the tournament for you to vote on. Voting will close at midnight every night, and the results will be posted in the next day’s post. In other words, be sure to check back every weekday to vote on new matchups and see who’s advancing through the tournament.
As always, be sure to post your favorites and predictions in the comments below, and thanks in advance for participating in this year’s VU Hoops Summer Tournament! Last but not least, here is a full list of all the players in this year’s tournament.
