Trey Murphy commitment coming soon; father speaks on finalists

Murphy is down to Villanova, Virginia, Pitt and Houston.

A fresh report from Phenom Hoop Report says that Rice Owls transfer Trey Murphy III will be making a decision on his future soon. Rick Lewis talked to Kenneth Murphy, Trey’s father, to break down the 4 programs that remain.

Villanova: “Coach Wright is a phenomenal coach and Nova is a storied program. Great tradition of winning and developing players.”

The report goes on to say a decision is coming soon, though no date has been set yet.

The elder Murphy had similarly good things to say about the competition (Virginia, Pitt and Houston), and it’s clear that Murphy is aiming for a place that can get him to the next level. He’s been a productive player at Rice and his physical tools (he’s grown to 6’8” and has a 7’1” wingspan) will have him on the NBA radar.

The next step is utilizing his sit-out year to bulk up and further refine his body and game. Given Villanova’s recent history of successfully implementing this approach with NBA players like Mikal Bridges, Donte Divincenzo and Eric Paschall, they should be in a strong position with Murphy.

There’s no firm commitment date yet, but it sounds like we should be on the lookout for a decision soon.
