Saddiq Bey continues to be recognized for his play.
After an impressive NBA rookie season with the Detroit Pistons, where he earned first team All-Rookie honors, Bey was chosen for the Team USA Select Team.
He was one of 17 players to make the roster, announced by Team USA Basketball on Thursday night.
He averaged 12.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists this past season. He shot 38.0% from beyond the arc.
Bey reached a number of milestones and records in his first year. He even finished with the third-highest number of made three-pointers by a rookie in NBA history with 175 total threes, right behind Damian Lillard (185) and Donovan Mitchell (187).
It’s widely speculated that if Bey had a full 82-game season to work with, that he would have broken Mitchell’s record, which was set in the 2017-18 season.
The Select Team will be coached by the Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra, who will be joined on staff by Gonzaga’s Mark Few and Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley.
The Select Team will scrimmage and practice with the Team USA basketball team to help them prepare for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
This is the seventh time a Select Team has been assembled (2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2019) to help Team USA prepare for major international competitions such as the Olympics or the FIBA championships.
Bey will be seeing his college coach, Jay Wright, regularly during this stretch. Wright will be making his first Olympics appearance as an assistant coach to Gregg Popovich for Team USA. He previously joined Popovich’s Team USA staff in 2018 for the FIBA World Cup.
