If you are in the Big East and you’re in the top 25, you’re gonna have a bad time.
All four ranked schools fell this week in very bad fashion. We all saw Villanova blow a 15-point lead to Marquette on Tuesday night, but the Wildcats bounced back Sunday afternoon with a huge come from behind win vs. Virginia. Road conference games are never easy, but it was good to see the team avoid back-to-back losses with a huge out of conference win.
Georgetown got a big home win vs. Creighton on Wednesday night. It was the Bluejays’ second straight loss after starting 18-1. The absence of Maurice Watson Jr. is showing.
The Hoyas were on fire last week as Butler suffered a loss at home to Georgetown on Saturday night. The Hoyas had three separate players score at least 20 points, including 20 from Jessie Govan in only 26 minutes off the bench. The loss helped the `Cats keep some distance in the standings.
Xavier participated in the annual Crosstown Shootout at Cincinnati last week. The Musketeers had an 8 point lead at the half and Trevon Bluiett started 8-8 from downtown, but it was not enough as the Bearcats stormed back to avoid the upset loss. Bluiett finished with 40 points on 12-15 shooting only to lose 86-78.
Although Marquette got wins in the past two weeks vs. Creighton on the road and the number one team in the country, their world came crashing back down as they were upset at home vs. Providence. It was the Friars’ first ever win at Marquette.
Seton Hall got its first home loss of the season vs. Butler by a score of 61-54. The Pirates only scored 19 points at the half but were able to hold a lead down the stretch only to eventually fall. They shot just 28.6% from the field, including 4-24 from three, and just 58.3% from the free throw line.
This week we get a ranked (for now) battle between Creighton and Butler, and then Creighton vs. Xavier on Saturday. Villanova wraps up the Wells Fargo series when they welcome St. John’s on Saturday night.
