What to watch for this week in the Big East

Villanova’s magic number for the Regular Season Big East Championship (not a share of it) is down to 1. Second-place Butler looks to end the season on a 5 game win streak in order to take it for themselves.

Wednesday night’s matchup just got sweeter.

The Wildcats welcome the Bulldogs to the Pavilion on Wednesday hoping to throw away Butler’s hopes at a comeback in the standings. If Villanova can’t finish it off then, they face another tough challenge on Saturday when Creighton comes to town.

In a great turn of events, the top four teams in the conference will be playing each other as Butler travels from Radnor to Cincinnati to face Xavier on the road. There’s no easy finishes to the conference schedule.

With any Xavier loss, Marquette has a shot of jumping the Musketeers for a spot in the top four, and a better position to get out of the bubble. The Golden Eagles face St. John’s on Tuesday and Providence on Saturday.

Seton Hall, Providence and St. John’s are currently in a three-way tie for 6th place. Those teams will be trying to avoid the bottom four spots in the conference; remember the last four play an extra game in the conference tournament.

While Butler has its eyes on the Regular Season Championship, they must still be watchful of the Creighton leapfrogging them; the Bluejays sit just a half game behind. Butler could easily drop two this week and fall into third place, possibly fourth with a big week by Xavier.
